Recently, I read a very fascinating account on the website www.realization.org, from a younger gentleman (American, early thirties, and yes: a barista), who claims that he had achieved self-realization.
Hi Jan. Nice to see you in a new (for me) location. :) Why does your wife think he's a fraud? My impression is the same as yours. (I'm saying "he" because you did but I don't know his sex.) I already replied to your comment about Langford on my site so I won't say more about it here.
Mostly because she is of the opinion that many Westerners (she is from India) are very good in communicating about spirituality, but are not the ‘real deal’. It’s her opinion that a true Master as Ramana, Neem Karoli Baba, or Ramakrishna, would not advertise themselves. They would teach their ‘disciples’, yes, but would not go out and promote their spiritual status to the outside world. I have to add that she didn’t read the article of ‘Mr. Barista’ on realization.org, she only reacted to me talking about it.
Oh, I see. I don't think he (?) is in Ramana's state either but I believe what he says in the article. As far as I know, he hasn't done anything to promote himself. He published anonymously on Reddit for a short time. As far as I know, nobody on Reddit knows his real name or whether he's a he or she. Then he stopped posting on Reddit and deleted his account. If he's teaching anywhere or has any public presence, I'm unaware of it.
I'm probably misunderstanding what your wife meant by promote.

I think we are probably right and she is wrong. Haha
